An implant is an artificial root, which takes over the function of real root. |
When you look at a tooth,,you see only about one third:the crown. |
Two thirds,the root,remains 'under water'. |
When such a root gets lost,or is lost,it can be replaced by a piece of material:the implant. |
Implants are usually made out of titanium and/or ceramic material. These materials are strong enough and are very well accepted by human body. |
After the implant have been grown firmly to the body, something can be build on top of them. For example a tooth (crown)or a prosthesis, which is 'nice-and-fixed'this way. |
What can be build on top of an implant? |
There are a lot of possibilities: |
When one tooth is missing,it is possible to make a replacement by means of one implant and one crown on top of it. |
When more than one tooth is missing, you can have more than one implant whit a bridge on top of them. |
When all teeth are missing, you can have 2 or 4 implants whit a prosthesis, which is 'nice and fixed' that way,on top of them. |
Also,in a situation like the above, you can have a bridge on top of at least 6 implants. |
Thinking of the fact, there is always an upper and lower jaw,of course there are several combinations of the above. |
